~Hey, today I did some research on how Mary got introduced to dance ~
On a trip to Amsterdam when Mary was little she went to a dance performance by students on Emilie Jacques-Dalcroze, the creator of Eurythmics; a way of learning and experiencing music through movement. The experience of watching the dance performance created an awareness of dance and a new way of life in Wigman.
Despite her parents protest Mary enrolled in Jacques-Dalcroze school in 1911.
The system of gymnastics rhythmically taught at Dalcroze's school became too tightly academic and confining for Mary because it put dance 2nd but music 1st.
After advice from Emil Nolde a German painter Mary went to Switzerland and in 1913 did a summer course by Rudolf Laban. Laban's lessons helped created Mary's modern dance movement. She remained at Rudolf Laban's school util 1919.
