~ Today while I was looking for a video of Mary Wigman I came across this video which explains a bit about her and how she became so recognized~
~Today I though I will tell you about Mary Wigman's style and what I thought about it~
I would describe Mary Wigman's style as soft and airy but at the same time sharp, angular and powerful. The accents were hit very strong and sharp as if they were sudden movements. There were a lot of hand actions and posing. I like how in different pieces there were different levels and different story line. Wigman's pieces I feel as if they can be interpreted in you own way and it is very improvisational. ~Today I found a video of a piece that Mary choreographed; it is called Totentanz, Enjoy~ ~Today I found out that Mary Wigman opened a school! I was fascinated and found out more to tell you all about it~ In 1920 Mary opened her own school in Dresden, this school soon became the focal point of German modern dance. At her school she shared her knowledge by training dancers and also experimenting with dance pieces. Mary created a dance troupe; among this troupe were people like Holm, Georgi, Palucca, Wall, and Kreutzberg. The troupe made its first apperance in 1923, during years coming she toured alone with her troupe. Mary made her London debut in 1928 and her triumphant U.S debut in 1930. Followed two more tours in the U.S between 1931 and 1933. Photos from Mary Wigman's school
~Today I want to show you a piece that Mary Wigman danced and I think it is a good but also quite bizarre, it is called Witch Dance ~ ~I was quite interested in how Mary became famous after leaving Laban's school, so I did some research and this is what I found out~
In the same year as leaving Laban's school Wigman did her first professional solo performance, in Berlin, Germany. After her performance in Berlin concerts in Berman, Hanover followed; these few concerts were poorly received. But later that year Mary won over audiences and critics in Hamburg, Zurich and Dresden, her reputation began to be established. By the mid 1920's Mary Wigam was widely known and became known as a leading person toward expressionism dance. ~Hey, today I did some research on how Mary got introduced to dance ~
On a trip to Amsterdam when Mary was little she went to a dance performance by students on Emilie Jacques-Dalcroze, the creator of Eurythmics; a way of learning and experiencing music through movement. The experience of watching the dance performance created an awareness of dance and a new way of life in Wigman. Despite her parents protest Mary enrolled in Jacques-Dalcroze school in 1911. The system of gymnastics rhythmically taught at Dalcroze's school became too tightly academic and confining for Mary because it put dance 2nd but music 1st. After advice from Emil Nolde a German painter Mary went to Switzerland and in 1913 did a summer course by Rudolf Laban. Laban's lessons helped created Mary's modern dance movement. She remained at Rudolf Laban's school util 1919. Mary Wigman was born on November the 13th 1886 in Hanover, Germany. Mary was a German dancer, choreographer, a well known pioneer of expressionist dance, dance therapy and movement training without pointe shoes. Mary is considered one of the most important figures in modern dance history. Mary died age 87 on the 18th of September 1973 in Berlin, Germany
